The Tocto Retablo is a result of a merger between European and Indigenous customs. Once the Spanish had militarily conquered the Incan empire, they pushed to convert the indigenous population to Christianity. One of the various Spanish customs adopted by the Indians was that of the portable shrine. These beautiful multi-figure scenes sit in a ceramic holder known as a Tocto. Religious traditions and spiritual culture are very important to the Peruvian people. Many of their crafts and art are a reflection of this. These are XS size at 1" x 1.75".
