Artist Statement:

San Pasqual (St Paschal Baylón), beloved in the American Southwest, was born in Spain in the mid-1500s. Known for his humility, he worked as a shepherd until being accepted as a Franciscan friar. Tradition holds that angels would assist him as he worked in the kitchen; he is popular today as a patron saint of cooks and kitchens. The quote I selected, attributed to San Pasqual, is the prayer of many who serve in kitchens: "I joyfully celebrate the food I am given. May it deeply nourish every soul that I feed." Also renowned for his devotion to the Eucharist, I included the perfectly full, round moon as a subtle symbolic reminder of this beautiful aspect of the life of San Pasqual.

I look forward to adding names and dates to this piece for the special cook in your family (or parish!), Confirmations or other special celebrations. Above the wooden doorframe beam is a lovely place to add custom details - such a unique gift! Names and dates are added by me, by hand, in text that matches the lettering within the original piece.

Prints measure 12x18, 11x14, 8x10, or 5x7 inches on bright white, acid free, 100# paper. A narrow white border runs around the edge of the print. All of my prints are professionally run by a small, locally owned printshop. Each print is signed in pencil by the artist (me), with the date and name of the piece handwritten on the back as well. This image is also available as a set of 12 2.5x3 inch prayer cards in a colorful organza bag. Featuring the main image on the front, the back has the quote in black & white hand lettered text. They make a unique and meaningful favor for Confirmation celebrations.
